#1: My Grandpa Loved God

Everyone remember those little “Daily Bread” devotionals?  Maybe they’re not as widespread as I thought in my head, but it was always on my grandparents’ table and it was pulled out each day.  My grandpa loved the LORD, as I shared at the memorial service:

If you hung out around my grandpa, the verse you would hear him most often quote from the good old King James, was Romans 12:1-2:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

Those who were around him the most, his wife and children, have memorized it because they heard it so often from him.  In his daily affairs, Grandpa recognized the daily pull of “the world” and the call of our LORD to not chase after it, but to be transformed by the renewing of his mind.  What did this mean?  It meant rather than reading the latest self-help book for direction or following the newest fad for joy, he opened the Holy Book.  Morning and evening times would often see Grandpa and Grandma with the Bible open (along with their Daily Bread), reading together, and renewing their minds with God’s wisdom.  Roy Nelson was a man of the Book.  In relation to the world, he was an unconformed man.
