Resolutions

New Year’s Day is a time when we move from reflection and farewells for the previous year into planning and envisioning what the coming year holds.  Many people are keen to writing “Resolutions” for the year, which I think are wonderful insomuch as they are sought out from God and carried out in the power of His Spirit.  I enjoy reading them and being challenged by how God is moving in others’ hearts.

One of my habits over the last ten years has been to read Jonathan Edwards’ “Resolutions” (which he wrote in 1722 and 1723) each New Year.  They are all worthy of thought and reflections, but here are five that were pulling at my heart strings this year:

13. Resolved, to be endeavoring to find out fit objects of charity and liberality.

16. Resolved, never to speak evil of anyone, so that it shall tend to his dishonor, more or less, upon no account except for some real good.

32. Resolved, to be strictly and firmly faithful to my trust, that that, in Prov. 20:6, “A faithful man who can find?” may not be partly fulfilled in me.

56. Resolved, never to give over, nor in the least to slacken, my fight with my corruptions, however unsuccessful I may be. purchase Prozac
