Beginner English Graduates

One of the things that I’ve been working on during the past year is a curriculum of American English for Chadians.  Most English curriculums are made for immigrants arriving in the West and therefore, the content includes vocabulary in contexts such as malls, theaters, and technology.  The majority of these items simply do not exist in a country like Chad.  Therefore I have created this curriculum to give Chadian and Sudanese students lessons in English in an environment which they are familiar with.  Each lesson contains a story, new vocabulary, and exercises in proper writing, pronunciation, and grammar.

As I’ve been building this curriculum, I have tested it out with a group of shop owners in town.  I receive feedback on how well they pick up on the concepts in the lesson and either leave what I’ve written or refine the methods and vocabulary further.  This test group just finished the entire Beginner Level of 70 lessons, so we had a little party and I presented them with certificates of completion in the course.  They were really excited!

    Hey Veronica,

You don’t really see Chadians ever do this with their hands during a picture, although I’m pretty sure I know what Jido is doing here. He has watched a lot of western movies and is taking his cue from those movies by putting up two fingers during a picture.
