Showering in Chad

Nehemiah thought you might want to see how we shower here in Chad, so he offered to model the routine he goes through every 2-3 days.  In our bathroom, we have 2 water barrels.  We use the water in them for drinking water (after putting it through a filter), flushing water (getting things down the toilet pit), and cleaning water (both the dishes and ourselves).

We keep a blue bucket, filled with water from the barrel, next to the shower.  We use a blue measuring cup to scoop water out of the bucket and dump it on our heads in order to “wet down”.  We stand in a basin in the shower, so that the basin catches the runoff, which can be used to wash our legs.  Once you’re wet, then you use your soap and shampoo, followed by a rinse with the blue measuring cup.

A survey of the household (which meant I asked Sonja) registered these amounts of water usage: Evangeline (12-15 cups)…..already acting like a princess, Mama (10 cups), Papa (5 cups), Athanasius (4 cups) as he keeps saying, “No, don’t want it”, and last but not least, our shower model and apparently the self-proclaimed King of Cleanliness, Nehemiah (2 cups).  Good grief…no wonder the kid is always dirty.

By the way for those of you wondering, yes we had to plunge our shower last week :)

I think Nehemiah calculated body mass after knowing his papa used 5 cups to shower he figured his equal would be 2 cups. Pretty smart boy!
Evangeline was just enjoying her shower.
