When Your Kids Disobey, But It’s Really Funny…

…man I hate that.  Because you know you need to teach them something, but your entire body is convulsing and your trying really hard not to laugh and encourage more of what they just did.

It happened yesterday afternoon with Nehemiah…here was the dialogue:

Nehemiah: Mama, can I quiz you on the state capitals?  Mama, can I quiz you on the state capitals?
Mama: One second, Nehemiah.
Nehemiah: Mama, can I do the capitals with you?
Mama: Honey, I just really want to lay down and rest for awhile right now.
Nehemiah: That’s what your flesh is telling you, but what is God telling you is the right thing to do?

Like us, kids have this impeccable ability to take the good lessons from God’s Word (such as the battle between the flesh and the Spirit) and forge them into a weapon which they try to use on others for their own satisfaction.  So, I had to toss that weapon in the trash heap and remind Nehemiah that he’s not his mother’s accountability partner or father and ought not to talk to her in that manner.

And then I chuckled for most of the night.  We’ll keep working on it, Bucko…I love you!

I don’t know that many would have been able to discern the correct response (the words you chose). It’s funny, but the right correction is is important. – Greg L.
