Sun Burns

I have been asked a few times why I don’t have more of a tan if it so hot and the sun is always shining here.  I’m always tempted to answer that my Scandinavian whiteness is impervious to any darkening mechanism, but that’s not actually true.

The real reason has to do with the sun itself.  Everyone knows that the temperature in the shade is cooler than the temperature in the sun.  In Minnesota, it can be the difference between 80 degrees F versus 100 degrees F.  But here in Chad, it is the difference between 120 degrees F and 150 degrees F.

These two categories can also be described as “Near Shock in the Shade” versus “Comatose in the Sun”.

So, Chadians (if they can help it) stay out of the sun.  People seek trees, buildings, or even vehicles to find some shade.  And in that way, we avoid sunburn (or even a tan).

Oh. Wow. I can’t believe I’m complaining about our 115 degrees. Praying for grace as you endure this coming summer. And to think last summer you were pregnant!!!
