A View of Our Street
We live on the east side of our street…pretty much, smack-dab, in the middle of the block, with neighbors on each side. Anytime you walk down a Chadian street, you’ll notice the different walls down the block. Looking at people’s walls can give you a pretty good idea of their income. For those who have more money, they overlay their brick wall with cement (and maybe even some designs). Those with very meager incomes simply use mud to overlay their bricks.
In the picture below, which is facing north, you will notice the wall of our home in the front right. You will notice a pile of dirt across the street from our house (not easy to distinguish from all the other “dirt”). People are getting prepared for the coming rainy season in a month or two. When hard rains come, they often quickly erode those walls overlaid with mud, so the extra dirt is stationed outside the wall for patching any sudden erosions or wall collapses.
