How Much Land Does A Man Need?
Renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy once asked the question, in a short story of the same title, “How Much Land Does A Man Need?” The story and the question are both extremely interesting. Some might say ten acres, while others might retort zero, but the ending to Tolstoy’s story sheds light into his simple answer. It’s a 15-20 minute read if you can afford the time and well worth it. While we were in Iriba, I was thinking about Tolstoy as we considered where we might live, whether we would rent a home or build our own, and if it would be better to live in a small home close to the people (in the center of town) or have some space for the kids to run around (on the edges of town).
In general, Iriba is a very open and spacious place. We found a couple homes that were close to being completed that seemed like a possibility for our family and we also saw a number of plots that had walls built around them but no house as of yet (so maybe we could build a home there). There is a lot of rock around Iriba, so many people build their walls and homes out of rock, rather than bricks.
