Grocery Store Anxiety

I thought I would share about my grocery store anxiety. I have always had it – even before we left America. Something about how my brain works, or doesn’t :) makes being in a grocery store or Sam’s Club VERY overwhelming and unenjoyable. So it was last week when we were away that I realized how spoiled we had been. As of last week, I had not yet been to a grocery store in America. My family and Jacob’s family, along with some close friends, have kept us well fed for just about a month.

So when I considered having to actually go to the grocery store today I had to give myself a pep talk and I even brought Evangeline along since she’s such a great little encourager :)
I got unto 35W and headed north, but the exit that I “normally” took two years ago was closed. I ended up going way past it to turn around. After turning around I missed the street on the other side because I thought there was an entrance where there wasn’t. I managed to get off on University only to find that there was a one way street and after that I determined I was going to simply turn around and return home.
As I headed back south, I ended up driving down to Lake Street to the Cub Foods there. Let’s just say that it’s a little crazy there. At one point I just wanted to find some peanut butter and I looked up at the aisle signs which were all in Spanish!

Well, we got home in one piece with some food for the week, although I never did find any peanut butter!

i can completely sympathize with you. just take a deep breath, walk in with your list and moral support person, and patiently seek out each item on your list. :) or beg someone to shop your list for you…allowing you to stay home. i’m sure there’s someone out there that would be willing to minister to you in that way.

  2. Hi Sonja! It was lovely to see your face for a moment yesterday! I’m sorry I had a tired and wiggly boy who needed to get home so I couldn’t stay to talk! I totally know what you mean about grocery stores. I have come home from numerous shopping trips and cried to Eric about the pressure I face trying to spend our money wisely! :) And I don’t go to the Cub on Lake, either. The signs are in English on the other side but I am always at the back of the store when I look at them so it is always Spanish. :) It shouldn’t be such a big deal to me but it doesn’t make the trip any easier!
