Secret Pride

Adoniram Judson once wrote a letter with a number of remarks to young people considering the call of working overseas.  One comment that has always stayed with me was his warning about pride.  Judson wrote: purchase Zoloft

Beware of pride; not the pride of proud men, but the pride of humble men — that secret pride which is apt to grow out of the consciousness that we are esteemed by the great and good.

You see, people with secret pride…people like me…know how to give God the glory, speak of our own weakness and sinfulness, so as to clearly distinguish that we do not have overt pride.  Yet, secret pride can increase even as we speak in words of humility.  The old adage “talk is cheap” is true.  That’s why I love how Andrew Murray described humility, when he wrote:

The only humility that is really ours is not that which we try to show before God in prayer, but that which we carry with us in our daily conduct.

So after all of our “good talk” in front of our companions is over and we go home, what does the rest of our conduct look like.  Are we happy to be laid low?  Are we okay when our spouses, children, or roommates expose those obvious weaknesses and sins, which we spoke about earlier in great humility, because we know it magnifies His sufficiency and strength?  I’m thankful for God’s help in purging many areas of overt pride in my life, yet praying even more fervently for Him to kill this secret pride.

Christian artist, Lecrae, has a song out called “Background”, which addresses this battle with pride.  He draws the connection immediately in verse one of the song, when he sings:

It’s evident you run the show, so let me back down
You take the leading role, and I’ll play the background

So let me fall back, stop giving my suggestions
‘Cause when I follow my obsessions, I end up confessin’
That I’m not that impressive, matter of fact I’m who I are
A trail of stardust leading to the superstar

See if you enjoy the song as much as our family:

  1. Matt and I really like Christian rap music ;) Thanks for sharing this song – we hadn’t heard it before! And thanks for the reminder about our pride that so easily sneaks up on us.

  2. Janice Moore says:

WOW – what a telling song. The insight seen in the hidden pride we so easily miss, sometimes even with good intentions, mine usually being to protect the truth. I sometimes feel a need to be in charge and in control, all the while forgetting the ONE who is truly GREAT enough to protect HIS WORD and speak through all His children after all, He’s been protecting His truth all along with out my help.
