The Value Of A Father

While it may be dangerous to write a post lauding your own office, I do because it is a tremendous honor to be a father. We must remember this and continue striving to lead well.

On Monday, I attended my friend Jeremy’s funeral down in the cities. With his passing so near to Father’s Day, it caused many unique reflections. As I walked through the Hallmark shop looking for a “Sympathy” card I noticed all the Father’s Day cards and my heart wept for the three boys who said goodbye to their father.

Yet, while I was at the funeral, I couldn’t help but admire how well Jeremy did leading his wife and three boys. He had prepared them for the possibility of his passing. He shepherded their hearts to feel the freedom to grieve and to continue to cast themselves upon the God of all comfort. I saw the clear value of a father and was encouraged to do well in shepherding my little flock.

We are always reminded of the value of something when it is gone. This is true, whether in passing or absence. I watched a number of videos of fathers returning from service overseas to their children young and old, which illustrated this truth. Here were a few favorites:
