Water Shortage

Never thought I’d hear this now.  In case you’re wondering, I am not writing this post from Africa.  While most of the school here in Quebec receives their water from the city, our apartment actually gets its water from a well.  Two weeks ago, a campus official stopped by to ask us if we had noticed anything strange with our water.  Well…actually, yes:

That’s a picture of our toilet.  If it’s difficult to see, there are small granules of black silt mixed in with the water.  That particular day, I had leaned over the sink to get a drink from the tap and got a mouthful of the black stuff :-).  The official explained to me that because of such poor rainfall this summer and the last several summers, the well is almost dry.

So for the last two weeks, we have been doing the same thing we do so often in Africa…praying for rain!  It’s great and reminds us of our need for his providence.  In the meantime, my industrious and part-African wife has been using the water collected from our dehumidifier to help supply water for our washing machine.  Nehemiah offered to take fewer showers, which I’m not sure means that he has a servant’s heart or is just trying to get out of cleaning up.  The good news is that it’s already rained a few times and the school is looking into some other solutions, so we’re hopeful they’ll be better water days ahead.
