Ramadan Begins

Thanks for your prayers yesterday.  Athanasius and Evangeline are both markedly better today (they have smiles on their faces).

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims.  It has some similarities and differences from what most Westerners might think about fasting and I’ll talk about that later this week.  Nevertheless, it is a challenge for people to go without food and water in this extreme heat, while trying to carry on their business in a somewhat slower fashion.

Interesting conversations always ensue during this time.  For example, one of our neighbors asked me right away on the street this morning how I felt about Ramadan and if I would be eating today.  I simply replied that God instructs us when we fast that we should do it in a way that is not noticeable to others, but is something that is between us and God.  Thus, I concluded, I don’t announce my fasting to others, but do it before God.  Judging from her reaction, she felt these words were very good. order Deltasone

I’m hoping that the ATM at the bank will work today as we have about $20 left in our wallets.  Here’s a picture of Hadassah and Justus playing under some steps together one day in N’Djamena last week:
