The main thrust of a sandstorm can pass in a blustery few minutes or stretch out to 30-45 minutes depending on the size of the storm, but the strong front to the windstorm is only the beginning.  The dust and sand just hang in the air as the front moves on and can often leave the entire area in a haze for hours.  Here were a couple pictures of Iriba as I drove out to let my students know that class would be canceled for the afternoon (only one student showed up):

There’s a phrase commonly used among expats in this part of the world when they talk about cleaning up their house.  They will often say to one another when asked what they’re up to, “Just sweeping out the Sahara.”  It’s usually a reference to the incredible amount of dust and sand that accumulates in a home in the desert daily, but the statement is never more true than after a sandstorm.  Here are a couple of photos of what our house looked like after the sandstorm passed (keep in mind, this was a clean home with the windows and doors shut):
