Late Night Wheels

Strange things happen in Chad during Ramadan because people’s schedules are essentially turned upside down.  In order to find some sort of equilibrium in a month where most people are not eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset, many folks are up at all hours of the night in order to get a couple good meals in before the sun comes up on the next day of fasting.  So, it’s not surprising to find more people up in the middle of the night during Ramadan, but we didn’t expect to see this when we were awakened at 2 AM from our sleeping quarters up on our guesthouse roof by a raucous crowd out on the streets.

Can you see what’s going on in the picture?  Some guy brought two pairs of roller blades and was “introducing a new sport to Chad” (or so he put it).  What began with a group of about 30-40 people quickly swelled to 200 as the young man was allowing anyone who dared to try and put these things on and skate with them.  Everyone howled with laughter as Chadian after Chadian buckled on the blades, stood up, took a few strides and wiped out.  Sonja and I were having a good time as well.  Here’s one fellow giving it a spirited try:

My interest was piqued and I decided to get dressed and head down to the street with everyone.  While chatting with a local shop owner, he asked if I’d ever seen these things before in my country.  I answered affirmatively and shared a little more about what they’re used for in our country.  He asked if I knew how to use them.  Once I said yes, he was yelling to the owner of the blades that the foreigner knows how to use them.  The owner instantly grabbed one of the two pairs and said, “Show us!”

Who would have thought I’d be on rollerblades in the capital city of Chad with hundreds of people staring, yelling, and clapping as I showed them how to rollerblade?  God has a sense of humor.  I went forwards, backwards, did some jumps over the medians, and performed some other silly requests like picking up a coin off a sandal in the street.  Everyone loved it and the duration of our stay in this N’Djamena neighborhood has been filled with lots of thumbs-up and smiles from people and opened up the door for other conversations.

What unique skill or hobby might God use to connect you with others today?  You never know!cialis online brand name
