Defecation Location

That title can only lead to good things.

This year has been a relatively healthy year for our family.  By relatively, I mean that we have managed to avoid major illnesses like malaria or dengue fever (a popular bug that’s hit other workers this year).  Unfortunately, relatively also included constant bouts of diarrhea and other stomach ailments, which are so common here in Chad.  In fact, as long as I’m making you uncomfortable, when’s the last time you had diarrhea?  I can’t even remember having it once growing up, yet hardly a month passes by here where every single member of our family does not have it.  Seriously, the level of consistency might make you wonder, why so often?

This is the kind of investigative reporting that keeps you coming back to the Broten Family blog (or you need some humor each day), which brings us back to the foreshadowing title of this post.  I can’t say I’ve visited every country in the world (only 20 or so), but I’ve never seen a place with so much fecal resources on display.  On the street, at a home, or in the market, you name the place and you’ll find this bacteria magnet there.  And each being does their fair share from donkeys to goats and even people.

I make light, but it’s actually a serious problem that many in the government and aid community are trying to help educate the population on to better understand how the lack of proper waste disposal negatively impacts people’s health.  By way of illustration, here’s a picture I took in the market a couple months ago.

The leftover scraps you see in the dirt (front and center) were the remains of a large cow pie that had just been cleaned up by a boy.  I watched the vendor in pink set out her greens not more than a foot from that pile of feces, where it sat for a good 30 minutes before it was picked up and taken away.  Yes, we’ve purchased lots of our food from this exact market, but other markets wouldn’t really be any different.

So, the lesson to be learned here is that similar to real estate, defecation is all about location, location, location…keep it far away from your food and you’ll stay in good health.cialis sale philippines
