Laundry Time

The water turned on this morning, so I thought it would be another great opportunity to share something water-related :)  We have a wonderful house helper, Fatuuma.  She has been working on the WEC compound for a number of years, and knows our house pretty well.  She is a hard worker and is good with the children.  Sonja has encouraged her to feel free to speak Chadian Arabic with the kids and teach them as they are together.

Most days, there is a small pile of laundry to wash for our family (we wear our clothes a little longer than we would in the States due to the shortage of water).  Fatuuma sets up one basin of water with soap and a second basin for rinse.  They sometimes need to emptied and refilled depending on the amount of laundry and it level of dirtiness.  The kids love to sit down and help her (usually with the rinsing).  Once the laundry has been scrubbed in soap and rinsed in water, it is wrung out and hung on a laundry line in the back of the house.  It usually doesn’t take more than 30 minutes to dry in Chad, (a nice feature of a dry climate), after which, we collect the clothes off the line, lest they start to accumulate the dirt and dust that swirls around here.
