Heat, Anger, and Folly

I told my kids last week that Solomon had some pretty convicting words for me.

He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is quick-tempered exalts folly. (Proverbs 14:29)

My temptation when I read Scripture is to qualify or even nullify the LORD’s words for me and my kids.  You know, “Oh they’re just at that stage in life” or “He hasn’t had his nap today”, or as it has been for me this past month with a quick temper, “The heat is really wearing on me.”  But Solomon’s words for me about anger and folly do not come with a qualifying clause about temperatures.  They just stand there, speaking to me absolutely.

I apologized to my kids for being such a fool in May and always being so quick to anger and exalt folly.  I told them I still needed to teach them and discipline them, but asked them to pray that God would help me to do so in a manner that is fitting with understanding.  It’s pretty humbling listening to your kids praying for your sins.  I would appreciate it if you joined them.
