Recently, a group of supporters wanted to help their children connect with our kids, so they asked their children what kinds of questions they had for our kids about life here and then forwarded them on for a response from Nehemiah and Evangeline (Athanasius just keeps saying “Lunch” so his answers weren’t accepted).  We thought you would get a kick out of the questions and responses.  My favorite was #6, how about you?  Here they are:

1.  Is everything sand?  (Amanda)

No, not everything is sand.  Right now it is rainy season and there is some grass coming up in our yard.  We don’t have a lawn mower.  Abdullai and Mohammed are going to bring their goats over to eat it.  (Nehemiah)

2.  Is it very dark at night?  (Nathan)

Yes it is very dark at night.  Miss Lorretta told me that there are hedgehogs here in the night so you should probably search for them.  (Evangeline)

3.  What do the people in Africa eat?  (Amanda)

Esh (stuff that looks like playdough made of flour and water), mulah (stew), kisra (thin crepes made from a soured mixture), sheep meat, beans, the Chadian children love to eat candies.

4.  Do you eat different foods now?  (Ike)

We can still eat pizza and pancakes.  That’s what I like to eat.  (Evangeline)

5.  What color is the water?  (Amanda)

Just like it normally is in Minnesota.  Except sometimes when it comes out of the hose there is junk in it.  (Nehemiah)

6.  Do you wear rags?  (Noah)

No, I always wear my pretty dress.  (Evangeline)

7.  If you had a pet, what would it be?  (Nathan)

I’ve mostly seen cats here. People don’t have pets here.  There are just animals roaming around- like goats, donkeys, camels, and horses.  (Nehemiah)

8.  What color is the wood?  (Josiah)

The wood is brown.  (Evangeline)

9.  Are there any garden hoses?  (Noah)

Yes.  We have a long garden hose that the guards use to water the plants.  (Nehemiah)

10.  When do you go to bed?  (Ethan)

Between 6:30pm and 7pm.  That is when it is dark and we get up when the sun rises at 5 in the morning.  (Evangeline)

11.  Are there any restaurants?  (Ike)

Yes, there is the Restaurant D’Abeche and Restaurant De Afrique.  They have ful (beans) that we like to eat there and sometimes Mama and Evangeline get a chicken.  (Nehemiah)

12.  Are there any rattlesnakes?  (Josiah)

I haven’t seen any.  (Evangeline)

13.  What kind of wildlife do you see?  (Nathan)

We see goats, donkeys, camels, cows, sheep, horses, and hedgehogs.  (Nehemiah)

14.  What do you play with?  (Amanda)

I play with my tea set with Mama and Miss Findley. (Evangeline)

15.  Where do you go to the bathroom?  (Amanda)

In a pit loo.  It’s a hole in the ground but they used cement to make it so we can sit down on it.  (Nehemiah)

16.  What is your house like?

We have a bedroom where Evangeline and Athanasius and I sleep.  That’s where I have my legos.  (Nehemiah)

17.  Does the tooth-fairy visit Africa?

Not that we know of :)  (Both)
