Bungee Cords

There are some things that never change; God, the sun, and little boys doing stupid things. For example, when I was a boy, my pictures were all over the hallways of Roseau Elementary School. “Why?” Good question. Glad you asked.

I had decided to play hockey in sub zero temperatures with out anything covering my ears.  At first, my ears were really cold, but then they started to warm up, and after 10-15 minutes of tingling, they were red hot.  I thought to myself, “Cold….ha….I don’t need a cap”.  The next day my ears started to blister, bleed, and then scab over.

That’s right, I got pretty severe frostbite on both ears.  So, the school nurse asked if she could take pictures of my ears and pin them up around the school so that other students could learn the dangers of frostbite and the necessity of wearing caps in cold weather.

Why write a post on this memory?  Well, they say an apple never falls far from the tree.

On Friday, Nehemiah decided it would be interesting to stick the metal hook of a bungee cord inside his mouth.  Can anyone see where this is going?  Good, you’re ahead of little boys.  A minute later the cord snapped back and Nehemiah had a gash inside of his mouth.  We had him swish water and clean it out, but he awoke on Saturday looking like he was sucking on a golf ball.  We begin to ask questions around.  Then, this morning, he awoke looking like he was sucking on a baseball.

So, back to Dr. Mark’s house, who has seen more of us in the past two weeks than he’d probably prefer.  Nehemiah has a bad infection.  Dr. Mark gave him some antibiotics, but if the swelling does not go down by tomorrow morning, he will need to drain his cheek.  Please pray that the swelling would recede tonight as he sleeps.  He was pretty miserable when he went to bed.

The good news is that Nehemiah has told me he will not suck on a bungee cord ever again.  The bad news is he got a lego stuck up his nose last night that took five minutes to retrieve.  How about you all?  Have any good “young boys doing dumb things” stories?

Kids, here’s your “Poster Warning” to not suck on bungee cords (and pray for this guy):

UPDATE: Staying with the “ball” theme, Nehemiah’s face was approaching a softball this morning, so we went to the doctor early.  The doctor reopened the wound and forced out a decent amount of pus.  A lot of screaming from the Bucko, but he was pretty tough.  His face still looks pretty fat, but his demeanor improved a lot through the day.  Pray that the swelling would recede as he sleeps tonight.

I was with Ethan, Isaac, and Noah up at our hunting property for a “Man vs. Wild” weekend last night when Ethan decided to slam the back hatch of the van at the same time as he jumped off of the bumper. He somehow got his fingers trapped in the hatch which proceeded to latch in place. I got it open rather quickly but he didn’t seem to think that it was fast enough. I cant tell if they are broken or anything but what will a Doctor do for fingertips anyways?

Oh Nehemiah, you truely are your father’s son. I’m sure your uncle Joseph and Joshua could tell you of a few of their own with their brother Jacob. Right guys? We are praying you feel better real fast so you can enjoy your time in Egypt. Love you!

  3. Oh my WORD!!!! And I have been praying the Lord would bless us with a boy LOL!! Update, girls come up with crazy wacky ideas too(at least mine do)!!! We know the fire department guys pretty well due to our very adventurous girls. Thank the Lord it is He that truly protects them and not me.
All joking aside…we will put that infection on our prayer list. That looks very painful. Poor little guy :(.
