Wide Open Spaces

Hmm…..so many directions I can go with this post.  Let’s see…

Early in our marriage, Sonja and I had some marital issues.  No, not the “which way do you set the toilet paper” one…it was bigger than that.  When we would go to sleep in our nice big bed, I would be forced to sleep on the very edge, while she migrated back and forth, throughout the night, on the other 3/4 space of bed.  She is the only person I know who covers more distance at night than during the day…and she’s not even nocturnal.  Meanwhile, I never moved.  The way I went to bed was the way I woke up.

After long discussions and analysis, we attributed our habits to our youth.  Sonja grew up sleeping in a queen bed, while I had a little single bed (or are they called twin beds?).  She had plenty of space to move around and roll over.  As for me, if I rolled right I would hit the wall; left, I fell on the floor (I know because I did it several times).  I had to condition myself to sleep still, while she could explore the vast expanses of her sleeping habitation.

Now, maybe you don’t buy this explanation because you believe our habits are more determined by nature than nurture.  Well, if that is so, then I have a picture, an observation, and three questions for you.

Observation: Note the three pillows lined up on the left and how lovingly the father of these three children had organized them at the beginning of their sleep.

Question 1: Which child was the only one of these three to NOT fall off the bed during the night?

Question 2: From top to bottom, what were the sleeping positions of these children in the beginning?

Question 3: If it is more nature than nurture, whose sleeping genes did these three children inherit; Papa’s or Mama’s?

I’m looking forward to your answers :)
