Electricity In Chad

Electricity is pretty much non-existent here in Chad, outside of the capital of N’Djamena.  Even people in N’djamena are fortunate if they receive electricity every other day.  Our city of Abeche actually has some infrastructure of electricity lines, but they are not producing their own electricity.  The presence of Aid Organizations has delivered some generators to cities like Abeche, which provides spurts of what is just common in the States.

For example, last summer we had electricity once every 3rd or 4th day for about 12 hours.  Then, we didn’t have any electricity for six months.  Right now, we’re in a good patch, as the city received a generator in January and we have had electricity about 4 nights a week from the hours of 10:30 PM until 7:00 AM in the morning (which allows us to use fans to help with the sleep).

To combat the lack of stability in power sources, people either turn to solar panels or generators.  Solar panels are nice because they are quiet and don’t require much maintenance, but they also cost more.  Most of our colleagues (including us in the future) go this route.  Most Chadians, who are able, use generators.  Often times, one person in the neighborhood buys a generator and then allows others to run a line to their home for a monthly fee.  Like our nighbors, we use a generator for 4 hours each night (from 6-10 PM).  Nehemiah has learned how to start the generator each night and enjoys the responsibility.
