Do You Groan?

It’s a fair question.

Most of the time, we think of groaning as a bad thing and an act of disobedience, such as the people of God groaning when they wandered in the wilderness or our children groaning when they’re asked to do their chores.

But this morning, our family was reading about a groaning that saves.  Ezekiel is caught by the hair, lifted up by the Spirit between heaven and earth, and in visions from God is shown Jerusalem and the abominations her people are committing.  Then comes this: purchase Prozac

3 Then the glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose loins was the writing case. 4 The LORD said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.” 5 But to the others He said in my hearing, “Go through the city after him and strike do not let your eye have pity and do not spare. 6 Utterly slay old men, young men, maidens, little children, and women, but do not touch any man on whom is the mark and you shall start from My sanctuary.”

Those who groaned at the evil acts being committed in the city were marked and spared from God’s wrath.  We took from this that there is a righteous groaning, which hates evil, both that which is within (our own), as well as the evil without (in the world).  The difficult question is, do I groan at evil?  Do the murder, idolatry, envy, malice, lies, adultery, and stealing tear me up inside or do I simply shrug my shoulders.  For the first time, I feel like I want to groan more.
