A Rug In The Dirt
In Chad, everyone has a rug. From small rugs to pray on or large rugs to lay on to rugs made of synthetic fibers which can be laid down just about anywhere, any dirty area of sand can instantly be changed into an acceptable place to lounge.
Across the street from our house, there is a large tree, which provides a little shade. Some women in the neighborhood, along with a number of children, sit out there each day…on rugs of course. They always seem excited to hear about what we are up to each day.
After church last week, many of them were in the street and one of the women asked Evangeline if she could do her hair (into what we would call cornrows). The woman loved it and so did the kids watching, while Evangeline was a good sport, telling me later that (and as you can see form the picture), “…it really hurt, Papa.”
