I just finished two weeks of instruction in the town of Iriba for teachers in the camps of Iridimi and Touloum.  The organization responsible for education in these camps has just purchased Headway English curriculum, so I am training the teachers on how to use the Headway resources in their own classrooms as I provide them with English instruction.

The group is real eager and a joy to be around.  Today, we were doing an exercise on object pronouns and I had the students asking a partner, “Do you like oranges, football, Ahmed, etc” in order to have them answer, “Yes I like (or no I don’t like) them, it, him, or her.”  I encouraged them to use many different examples.  Their choices were interesting, but none so much as when I heard Adam ask Habib, “Do you like Janjaweed?”  You can read about the Generic Zoloft Janjaweed and their relationship to the Darfurians to better understand what Habib’s answer was.

We made it halfway through the Headway Beginner book and I hope to return in a month to finish it with them.  Here’s a picture of the class from this past week:
