"I Chadian"
The other week, I went to the market to pick up some fruit for the family. Athanasius asked if he could tag along (with a smile that was tough to refuse), so I brought him with. Having the kids with us in market can be a pretty big hassle because all the beggar children crowd around them and want to touch their white skin, while all the women want to hold the youngest two.
On this particular trip, a man really took to Athanasius when he discovered he could speak Chadian Arabic. When we got back in the vehicle, I told Athanasius I was proud of him for speaking Arabic and how I could tell that really made the man happy.
Athanasius just shrugged his shoulders looked up at me and said (in English), “Yeah, I Chadian. I don’t speak English. I speak Arabic.”
