Jacob and I made a decision early in our marriage to teach our kids at home (at least in the primary years) when we read God’s words to the people of Israel just after He gave them the Ten Commandments. Here were the verses:

6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

We felt the best way we could “teach them diligently” in this all encompassing manner was to have them home with us learning how to apply the Word of God each day to all subjects of learning. It’s not always easy, but we have found huge blessings each step of the way and His grace has been sufficient.

We started “school” again last week. It was really good to get back into a little rhythm for our family since we lose a little bit of that rhythm when we are traveling. It has been so nice to take advantage of the resources here that we don’t normally have in Chad. For example, as part of our learning last week we visited the library, went skating with friends and enjoyed the science museum on three separate days.

I’ll share a little about what school looks like with each of the kids in the days ahead, but here’s a picture of us with our friends last week at the Science Museum:
