Holy Spirit Golfing

I am close to finishing Francis Chan’s book, “Forgotten God”, which focuses on the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life.  For the most part, I have been pleasantly surprised and challenged by the book to walk in the Spirit. purchase prednisone

In one of the earlier chapters, Chan discussed Paul’s words about how the Holy Spirit helps us in prayer, “because the Spirit intercedes for the Saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:27).

Then he shares this little anecdote about golfing:

So many times in life I haven’t known what to pray, either for myself or for others.  Other times I pray for stupid things.  For example, a while back I was out golfing with some friends and decided I really wanted to shoot in the 70s (I generally am in the 90s).

So in a moment of shallowness, I prayed that God would empower me to play my best round ever.  I guess the Holy Spirit was praying too, because that day I shot 115 (possibly my worst score ever).  The Spirit knew I needed to work on my anger and humility, instead of adding to my pride.

That made me chuckle and was a gentle reminder that when things don’t turn out as I had prayed for them, it may just be because God has a better plan for my sanctification.
