Our Social Security Interview

On Friday, Sonja and I went in to apply for a social security card for Hadassah.  Since Hadassah was born in Chad, we were told that we would not be able to acquire a social security card for her until we returned to the States.  So, we marched into the local social security office with our three forms of identification for Hadassah, which were 1) Hadassah’s “Acte de Naissance” (that’s French, so I’m not completely sure, but I think “naissance” is birth, therefore I’m guessing it’s her Chadian birth certificate), which looks like a bookmark, 2) Hadassah’s “Consular Report of Birth Abroad” which legally is the equivalent to a birth certificate here in the States and proves her citizenship, and 3) Hadassah’s passport.

The process includes a brief time where an interviewer asks you some questions and confirms that all of your answers on your application are indeed true.  Well, I had to bite my tongue as our interviewer asked us this:

Now, it says here that your daughter was born in Chad…so, were you there on vacation?

I just turned to Sonja and whispered, “That’s going on the blog” and then explained our situation to him, even though I really wanted to sarcastically answer,

Yes, we noticed the popular trend of heading to Africa for baby delivery, and especially the enticing hot spot attractions that disease-ridden deserts offer, so we thought we’d schedule our vacation in Chad at the time of our due date.

Sort of glad I kept that reply to myself.  Here’s our little Chadian-American with her big brother:
