Ultrasound Scare
On Tuesday afternoon, we received a call from our doctor. He had looked over Sonja’s ultrasound images from earlier in the day and noticed that our little girl had a couple black spots on the images of her brain.

Sonja heard the words “cysts on her brain”, “chromosome abnormalities” and Down’s Syndrome”, along with some quickly forgotten percentages and our hearts felt deeply troubled. Have any of you ever heard those words and wrestled with those fears? We had to sit down and pray and remind ourselves that every child is a precious gift from God, whether they are perfectly healthy or face physical or mental challenges. Each is designed by God with our “good” in mind.
We sent out a text to ask our family and friends to pray as the LORD would lead them. You all are so wonderful. Your care for us and our souls is so genuine. We received a barrage of texts reminding us of His goodness, the blessing that this little girl will be no matter what the outcome is, and facts to help us better understand what the doctor had told Sonja.
So, here’s the situation that we’ve come to see more clearly (we think). Our little girl has two black spots that are cysts on her brain. Yet with no other ultrasound indicators in her images, this means there is a 5% chance that she has chromosome abnormalities that would lead to something like Down’s Syndrome. The stronger probability is that she has choroid plexus cysts (CPCs) which is a buildup of fluid in the part of the brain which makes the fluid for cushioning to cushion the brain and spinal cord. CPCs only occur in 1% of all babies (usually early in the pregnancy) and usually dissolve as the baby grows and the fluid moves to the places it’s meant to be.
So, as we said to others on Tuesday, please pray as the LORD leads. You are all so wise and faithful, we trust that the stirrings God gives you to pray for us and our little baby will be just what we need in mercy for that hour.
The LORD is knitting this precious baby in her mother’s womb and He does all things well. I felt very confident praying that the fluid will end up in the right places, according to his glorious design. Have no fear of bad news. May your hearts be steadfast, trusting in the Lord. (Ps. 112:7,8)
