First Week Highs and Lows

Our first week here was full of unpacking, grocery store shopping, looking for a doctor, having a slight meltdown and reconnecting with the other families coming here to learn French.  Similar to our process for packing up, Jacob and I have a pretty good routine for settling in to a new place, although it always has its ups and downs.

Day One
Generic prednisone

  • Unload the van and bring everything into the house.
  • Get sheets on the beds.
  • Go to the grocery store and get necessary food.  Forget that we have to inform our credit card company that we are now in another country.  Jacob goes home to use our computer to Skype them while Nehemiah and I continue filling the cart.  Meet a cashier who is NOT friendly and won’t speak English.  Feel like I never want to go to the grocery store again.

  • Focus on making the kids’ rooms workable.  Take out the old dressers that will fall over when touched.  Make a book nook.
  • Trip to Walmart to buy laundry baskets, pillows, garbage bags, bean bags, etc.
  • Crash and take a nap because trips to Walmart ALWAYS sap my energy.

Day Three

  • Organize.  Find used furniture on campus that we can use.  Need two more chairs because Jacob and I have been standing up eating meals for the past two days so that the kids can sit in the four chairs that are here.
  • Commit to make meals because we’ve been eating pizza and Subway and Mc Donalds for most of the last week.

Day Four

  • Organize some more and start to think about how to make the apartment look pretty.
  • Jacob takes another trip to Walmart to buy some rugs.

Day Five

  • Everything has a place at least for now.  We’re not in NEED of anything to make daily life work.
  • MELTDOWN.  I cried most of the day and I”m not even sure why.  Maybe it’s because there wasn’t anything practical to keep me busy and the thought of going out and meeting another crabby grocery store cashier that won’t speak English was unappealing.  Maybe it’s because up until now, I had to deal with how everybody else felt about us leaving and I finally had the time and space to feel sad about leaving something behind and starting something new.
  • Driving to the doctor appointment back across the border, which I didn’t know if I would be able to get through without crying.
  • Getting stuck at the border for an hour and a half in “holiday” traffic, which resulted in me arriving 35 minutes late for my appointment.  They still let me in.
  • Jacob listened to me and prayed with me a lot.
  • Doctor’s appointment was an answer to prayer.  The doctor was encouraging and helpful.
  • Went to bed early.

Day Six

  • Woke up and prayed again that I would have joy and want to enter in to this new day and new culture and new relationships.
  • Decided to go to the flower shop to buy some flowers.
  • Prayed with Evangeline and Hadassah that the ladies in the shop would be nice.
  • Another answered prayer.  They were.  We learned the word flower and came home with some gerbera daisies to brighten up the kitchen.
  • Decided to find a place to get a Caramel Latte on Saturday mornings.
  • Prayed with Evangeline and Hadassah that the lady would be nice.
  • Another answered prayer.  She was!  We learned how to say Caramel Latte in French (very exciting for me).
  • Even though He wouldn’t have to, the Lord uses simple worldly pleasures to encourage me that learning French can be fun and it’s going to be okay.
  • Topped off the day with pizza and lasagna with our team.  Laughed with the other ladies.  Watched the 14 kids playing outside together and wondered why I ever was worried about what this next season in our life would bring.
