History w/ Samuel de Champlain
I always think it is interesting that the word “history” is so similar to “His Story.” I’m not sure where the word comes from and if I were my husband I would spend several hours investigating the origin of the word history:) but I’ll leave that up to you if you’re interested and you can tell me what you find.
This year in Nehemiah’s history curriculum with Veritas Press, he is studying the explorers that came from parts of Europe over to North America. A couple weeks ago his history card was “Samuel de Champlain.” As we read about this explorer we realized that the very region we are living in was probably trodded by Samuel de Champlain himself. Thanks to the internet, I found out that Lake Champlain which stretches from Vermont and New York all the way north into Québec was named after this famous explorer.
So I thought what better way to bring history to life than to go explore the land and find Lake Champlain as if we were Samuel de Champlain. We drove across Québec and into northern New York for a day together. We got to consider what it might have been like for him to meet the Native Americans that had already established themselves here and what the land here might have been like without any buildings on it. Here are some pictures of the kids from our history field trip:
