Feeling Overwhelmed?

There have been situations in the past when I’ve felt overwhelmed by having multiple things that need to get done.  In fact, everything just runs together in my mind and sometimes its difficult to sort out or prioritize things.

Packing is one of those situations where I can feel overwhelmed.  More recently, having five children has my head spinning.  Which is more important: the pile of dirty pots from lunch, Nehemiah’s report of the NHL’s recent agreement, the fact that Athanasius doesn’t have pants on and I’ve already asked him three times to put them on, Hadassah’s accident in her pants, Evangeline’s glass that just broke on the floor, Perpetua needing to nurse, or the visitor who just knocked at the door?  Sometimes I feel like this woman:

This morning, my devotional, “Be Still My Soul” encouraged me with the following verses by an unknown author:

From an old English parsonage, down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, as it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the hours the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration –
“DO THE NEXT THING.”

Many a questioning many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, guidance, are given.
Fear not tomorrows, Child of the King,
Trust them to Jesus,
“DO THE NEXT THING.”

Do it immediately; do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His Hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all resultings,
“DO THE NEXT THING.”

The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing,
Then as He beckons thee
