Rap Music

Ever since I was a kid, I have liked a wide variety of music. I grew up on a lot of country and christian contemporary music. But, eventually I spent time enjoying pop, alternative, classical, and instrumental music as well. Today, I can appreciate and listen to almost every kind of music, except for heavy metal (apologies to all you AC/DC fans)…too hard to understand.

One genre of music that I’ve grown to appreciate more over the years is rap. When I started teaching in the inner city of Minneapolis, I begin listening to it, as many of my students were always talking about their favorite rappers. The emergence of Christian rappers like Lecrae and Andy Mineo, have brought a lot of solid messages to this genre and our family really enjoys listening.

So, what makes rap unique. Something I really appreciate artistically is the rapper’s ability to express old truths in modern language. I’ve shared on this blog before how the song “Background” helped me to rethink what it meant to live in humility. And a couple weeks ago, when I was wrestling with what it meant to share Christ with those around me at all times, there came this simple expression from the song, “Tell The World“:

“I’m a billboard.”

That’s terrific! My testimony shouldn’t be something that I turn on or off, but something that is clearly on display for the world to see…sort of like a billboard. So, for those of you who enjoy thoughtful lyrics and the rap genre, here’s Lecrae and Mail Music with that song, “Tell The World“:
