Home Improvements: The Yard
Our yard is one of the things to potentially like the most about our home. After being cramped up in pretty small houses with no yard at all for many years, our children are delighted at the amount of space they have to run around.
The one catch is that when I arrived to see the house last fall, it looked more like a dump or a wasteland than it did a promising yard. There were building supplies, tools, garbage, and thorn bushes all around, which by virtue of their dominance on the landscape, should be a national tree of Chad. Here was one of the first pictures of the yard when we arrived:
Working on this yard has required more time than anything else. We have had to collect a wide assortment of trash, chop down a lot of those meddlesome thorn bushes, and pile all that stuff together:
Then, we located our inner pyromaniacs and disposed of all that stuff the quickest way we knew how:
Slowly, but surely, our yard is taking shape after the massive cleanup. Hopefully, we’ll be able to add a few colorful desert plants in time for the rainy season later this year.

During my time in northern Africa it was disturbing to see the trash, garbage and really dangerous sharp objects scattered everywhere. I took my class on a garbage & trash field trip to the field next door to the school to collect and categorize everything, and help them realize the need for disposing of all discarded items with care. I guess it does take a village, but you have a wonderful Wonderland here of your own making. Bravo!
