Not Lacking

gifts

Last week, we finished the book of Acts with our friends here in Chad and decided to jump into Corinthians as a group. Our family reads sections of these passages each evening, both in Chadian Arabic and English, and then discuss it together.

The first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians contains some oft-quoted verses about God being the one who gives growth and how He chooses the foolish and weak to shame the wise and strong, displaying clearly that all boasting should be in Him.  But, what stuck out to me this past week was something he said early in the first chapter.  Here’s what had me contemplating…just one short phrase:

…you are not lacking… (1 Corinthians 1:7)

I know there are scores of articles written about church scandals and the lack of faithfulness to God’s Word.  There are no doubt many books out there detailing the pitfalls of such churches and how to avoid them.  But, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find a more famous book airing the dirty laundry of a church than the books of Corinthians in the Bible.  And yet Paul opens his letter to them by writing “you are not lacking”.

How can this be?

The answer of course lies in the fact that man is not justified by works, but by faith because no man will be found righteous in the eyes of God since all have sinned.  It is only through faith in an alien righteousness, namely, the righteousness of Christ that we can be justified.  And in that righteousness, we are not lacking anything.  This is why Paul said,

“I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless buy Prozac online in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:4-8)

This is such an encouraging word to me, who can fall into the trap of feeling like I need to prove myself, rather than resting in that enriching, sustaining, guiltless grace which God has bestowed upon all His children in Christ Jesus.

Thank you LORD that we are not lacking in any gift because of Christ!cost for cialis from walmart
