Some everyday experiences in other parts of the world are so novel to foreigners that they’re willing to pay locals to experience it themselves. One great example of this here in Chad is the camel ride. We did this in Egypt a few years ago at the pyramids, Kendra enjoyed a ride with other young adults last fall, and it’s a common request of visitors, who are more than happy to pay for the chance to ride.

Athanasius may never have to worry about this fee. In fact, I’m considering whether we should start charging locals who can’t seem to resist wanting to plop the Scooter on their ride. So far, he hasn’t mounted a camel although the offer came from a man passing by on one last week. But, he has repeatedly been placed on donkeys and even a horse. Last month, one woman, who was trailing Sonja and the kids by a ways, picked up her pace, jumped off her donkey and stuck Athanasius up there just to see his smile as he rode.
