Walls of Iriba
One purchase Prozac thing which is quite unique to Iriba are the ways which many people construct their walls. In most places in Chad, walls are made from either mud or clay bricks and then held together with mud. If someone has enough money, they will then put cement on the outside of those bricks to hold things together in the rainy seasons. Here is an example of some homes from our old neighborhood in Abeche (see background):
But, here in Iriba, many people construct their walls from the stones of the hills surrounding the town. The stones are delivered, shaped, and slowly stacked together in a process that takes a lot more skill and precision that I first Generic Zoloft would have thought. Here’s a wall going up in town:
Mud is then slopped in every nook and cranny to help hold things together before cement is applied between stones to strengthen the entire wall. Some people
will then paint the cement white (there’s a great fascination with white here, that I don’t understand because with all the sand and dirt blowing around, it quickly starts to become dirty). You can see our wall (w/o paint) as well as our neighbors’ wall (w/paint) across the street if you’re not too distracted by the cute kid opening the gate for me:
