Sonja is an “ideas” person, while I’m a “refiner”.  This often leads to her sharing LOTS of different plans that she would like to implement, while I ask her some questions to clarify whether those plans are doable.  It might sound like a recipe for disaster in our marriage, but it actually works rather smoothly between us.  There are sometimes when I chuckle at my wife’s ideas and shoot them down quickly, but other times when Sonja absolutely knocks it out of the park.

Such was Field Day 2014.

Sonja had this crazy idea back in May that she wanted to give each of the kids and any interested adults a Fitness Challenge to exercise each day during the month of June, leading to a “Field Day” competition for the kids with many different events similar to the ones we grew up with.  If it worked out with the Hutts’ baby plans, we would try to do it as we passed through Abéché.

All of our friends contributed and it turned out to be a whopping success.  The kids were put into teams, appointed captains (older kids), chose team names and colors, and were given adult supervisors.  They then participated in events like the standing long jump, leap frog, potato sack races, jump roping, egg in spoon relay, and a water balloon toss.  Here’s Evangeline and Hadassah with Eliana Morgan on the Olympians Team (guess their color).

We had a blast hanging out with our friends and the kids really loved the fun.  As a person who has almost zero ideas on a daily basis, I really love being married to someone who generates so many of them.  I’m already looking forward to Field Day 2015.
