The New Sultan

In our old country of work, the sighting of a helicopter was usually a bad thing, but a couples days ago, when this helicopter flew into town, we knew that the president, his family, and other dignitaries were arriving for the coronation of the new Sultan (see if you can spot the helicopter in the picture here).

Many, many years ago Muslim lands were divided into sultanates, and sultans were the heads of those lands much like a king over a kingdom in order to manage and rule them.  While colonization, along with new nations and countries may have altered the role of a sultan today, he is still an extremely respected man by the people and someone looked to for guidance of the people.  So, people came from all over planes, vehicles, and especially…camels.  I sat on the main street and watched the long procession of camels as they pulled into town.  The outside walls of the Sultan’s new home (maybe “palace” is a better word) are in the background.
