Hu Yajri

In Arabic, it means “he runs”.

My friend Baasit often has a smile on his face and loves to tell stories.  Here is one that he shared with me this week, which he says his grandmother used to tell him and all his cousins (I will tell it as if I’m her):

Children, one day in the future
The white man and the black man will come together

When the white man sees the black man
He will yell, “Satan” and run away

At the same time, the black man will look at the white man
And also yell, “Satan”, while running in the other direction

After a short while, the white man will stop and think to himself
“Why am I running?  I will return to talk with this man”

(At this point, Baasit cannot stop laughing and blurts out)

Unfortunately, the black man just keeps on running and running!

It’s a lot of fun listening to Baasit try to get through the story without losing it.  I also told him that I’m glad he is not the like the man in the story who runs away, but that he feels welcome to visit my home and sit with me.
