Going To A Wedding

Thanks for all your prayers for my health.  I think it is safe to say the malaria is gone.  I had some other complications which we discovered were from amoebas in my system, but they are also now being dealt with.  Praise the Lord for medication.

I am actually in the town of Guereda presently.  It is located about halfway between Abeche and Iriba.  I am running the same program I did in Iriba for teachers in two camps near this town.

Though I am away, life still bustles with activity for Sonja and the kids.  While I was in Iriba two weeks ago, a member of our househelper Fatuma’s family was married, so the kids and Sonja hiked off to the wedding.  This does not take place in a chapel or any building at all.  In fact, it mainly consists of visiting the home of the family, possibly helping to prepare the food, and eating some food.  In this first pic, a woman is making a thin sour bread called kisra:

These two pics show women plucking leaves in order to make a green sauce, while another woman stirs all the meat in a large pot:

Lastly, a couple pictures of the kids, who Sonja said sat for hours in a pretty hot sun while all of this happened.  Way to go kiddos!

Looks like you guys have fun, glad Mr. Broten is feeling better. Samuel and I would see weddings on the street in Sudan, and we’d ‘visit’ them just to get the sweets they’d always stuff us with.

I would give anything to know how to make kiisra. We had that in Sudan, but have never known how to make it. I’ve tried to find the dura grain that they used when I was a kid, but can’t find it anywhere. Got any help for me on that or with the greens too? Thanks much. Makes me homesick for the land I knew and loved now almost 50 years ago. Blessings to you!!
