Sweet Six For The Dolly!

Today, Evangeline turned six and we celebrated with some creative cupcakes that Sonja whipped up for some Chadian and expat friends this morning.  We enjoyed lunch together as a family and finished the day with a special Father-Daughter birthday date.

As has become a tradition in our family on Evangeline’s birthday, we pulled out Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe in order to read some lines from St. Clare’s daughter, Evangeline (affectionately called Eva), who, as her name implies, was always sharing good news and oft-concerned for the well-being of her father’s slaves.  One profound thing she said to her father when he begged her not to be so concerned about their suffering and poor conditions in life was this:

“O, that’s what troubles me, papa.  You want me to live so happy, and never have any pain,—never suffer anything,—not even hear a sad story, when other poor creatures have nothing but pain and sorrow, all their lives;—it seems selfish.  I ought to know such things, I ought to feel about them!”

But my favorite line is when little Eva becomes sick and is near to death.  As she talks with her father, he asks her what she thinks it means to “be a Christian”.  Here’s the dialogue:

“You are a Christian, are you not, papa?” said Eva, doubtfully.

“Why do you ask me?”

“I don’t know.  You are so good, I don’t see how you can help it.”

“What is being a Christian, Eva?”

“Loving Christ most of all,” said Eva.

“Do you Eva?”

“Certainly, I do.”

“You never saw him,” said St. Clare.

“That makes no difference,” said Eva.  “I believe Him, and in a few days I shall see Him;” and the young face grew fervent, radiant with joy.

Join us in thanking the LORD for Evangeline today and praying that she would love Christ most of all.
