Catching Chickens

I know, I know…it sounds like something that people in a small farming community do for fun on the weekends….like cow-tipping, right Wade?I meant to put this up a long time ago, but somehow forgot about it.  During one of my trips to the refugee camps to teach English, one of my students purchased some chickens and kept them at the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) station while the classes were ongoing.

At the end of the two weeks of classes, the time came for my students to return to the camps and so Abubaker had to gather his chickens for transport.  Absolute hilarity ensued, as I watched three men corner, grasp at, lunge for (and most often miss) the chickens.  They asked me to join in with them and so with great compassion I told them, “I’m much better at taking pictures than catching chickens.”

And so, here is your provocateur:

The goal is to corner the chicken and grab it by the legs when it tries to run or fly by.  Here was a near miss as the chicken squirted by the JRS guard:

Here, the chicken hops up to semi-fly by an entrapment, as the guard missed its legs, but the touch was enough to cause the chicken to tumble to the ground.  It appears Abubaker was laughing as much as I was:

Finally, after about 20 minutes of this, the three men cornered the chicken and this time, when it jumped up, one of the men nabbed its legs and tied them up.  The chickens are then transported together with their legs tied:
