Home Confusion?

Last week, on the 2nd day in a hotel in Roseau, Athanasius stopped at the door, turned around and asked me, “Is this our home now?” Tough to blame the guy for any confusion, as we have stayed in about seven different places over the last three weeks.

It is a good question though, where is our home? For that matter, where is your home? Some people say that home is wherever we are together as a family. Others might say it’s where they grew up. I have felt a strange home-happiness in Sudan and Chad, which I think is partly due to a feeling I have that it’s where I was made to be. Sonja, on the other hand, often tells people that home feels somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean (between Minnesota and North Africa).

But no matter what our answer to that question is here on earth, the truth for believers in Christ is that this earth is not our permanent home. It is not where we finally “belong”. Here’s a song that reminded me of that today:

I love how my son Nick (12 years old) thanks God each night not only for his house but his home. Always makes me appreciate both!
