I remember taking an art class once…and that’s the extent of what I can recall about art from my childhood and adolescent years.  I don’t actually remember any lessons…just that I took the class.  Maybe that explains why I have no concept or artistic appreciation for color, shape, and texture.

There’s really only one hope for an aesthetically ignorant guy like me…marry an artistic savant!

Ever since I met Sonja, it has amazed me what she can do with a pencil and a brush.  Early in our relationship, she took me to the Minneapolis Institute of Art and it floored me what she noticed in a painting, drawing, or sculpture that I just didn’t see.  No matter how transient our lives are, she manages to spruce up our home with things pleasing to the eye.

For example, we’ve only been in Abéché less than two months and she has our walls decorated with different creations (not an easy task with cracked cement and chipped paint).  One wall has a historical timeline running around it (for the kids’ history studies):

I may not know how to describe it well, but I can tell you that it certainly brightens up our home.
