Our house is one of the more rare homes in Abeche in that it has a flat cement roof.  For the majority of the year, when it isn’t raining, it is spectacular for sleeping on as the extra elevation brings a little cooler air.  But during the brief part of the year where it does rain…we’ll let’s just say that the architects and builders here have not perfected the art of “runoff” yet.There are actually runoff tubes around the house.  If enough water gathers on the roof, it will start exiting the tubes.  Hadassah calls this, “The house is peeing.”

The problem is that there is no slope or grade to the roof at all, therefore most of the water simply gathers in large puddles on the roof.  Either Nehemiah or I must then use a squeegee to forcibly push the water to the runoff tubes or else the water eventually seeps through cracks into the house and drips from the ceiling:
