Chad (Where Feet Will Fail)

One of the blessings that a conference or retreat brings to our family is exposure to some of the songs that churches and believers are singing throughout the world.  Last month, I heard a new song from Hillsong that profoundly struck me because of the way that the lyrics mirrored so many things I’ve heard my wife say to others about Chad.  The song is called “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” and it draws off of Peter’s encounter with Christ:

The song opens by setting the context:

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail

Walking on water is not what we would call “an ideal place to be”.  It’s not a place we’re familiar with and it brings out some obvious weaknesses (e.g. um, I can’t walk on water).  Therefore, most of us would say this is not something a sane person would try to do.  We pity the young child who has a crazy notion that they can do it and steps off a dock only to end up with a nasal passage full of water as they struggle back to shore.

Yet, Jesus calls Peter to walk out on that water and I would argue he calls each of us into different, but equally crazy places of weakness.  Why?  I think the answer is found in the bridge of the song:

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

There is something about being in a place that isn’t all put together with nice borders and protective boundaries.  It seems naive to walk on water, live in a country like Chad, visit a prison, or go out to a bar for conversations with other locals outside of your normal circle of friends.  But it’s in these places that we grow because our faith is strengthened as we walk with Christ.

With a heart full of love, some of Sonja’s friends have told her that when they see her life in Chad, they feel pity for all of the modern conveniences that she goes without.  She often responds by telling them that she feels a greater blessing in living here because she finds herself strengthened in faith by Christ as she is brought to the end of herself in a place where her own feel fail.

Take a listen to the song and ask yourself today, what feet-failing place might the LORD be calling you to venture into this year?

This is one if my favorite songs right now- and I often think about you and pray for you when I hear it. You are walking this out so faithfully and I am so spurred on by your family. It begs the question for my own life too.
Love you all! Praying for you!
