Nehemiah Versus The Deer

A few years ago in 2012, Nehemiah was able to spend a deer hunting season with Grandpa Broten in Roseau and learn all about deer hunting.  Apparently, the lessons helped.

Since Nehemiah is legal hunting age, we picked up a deer hunting license in St. Paul before he, Athanasius, and I drove up north to join Grandpa, uncles, and cousins at the hunting cabin.  Here’s a picture of the boys with Grandpa:

Nehemiah’s only experience with a gun was shooting a small 22 a few years ago.  He had never used a gun like a .243.  So, Grandpa took some time in the morning to remind him how to carry a gun, load his shells, and use the safety.  He then set him about 25 yards away from a target to take a shot.  Surprisingly, he was near the bullseye.  Backing up to distances of 50 yards and 100 yards still found him near his mark, so Grandpa declared, “If he shoots like that, he’ll do just fine.”

That afternoon, we headed out into the cold to sit in some nice enclosed stands Grandpa had made for this season.  We sat and waited…and waited…and waited.  After about ninety minutes of sitting and listening to Athansius talk about how bad he had to pee, we noticed a couple does come out into the field.  The unfortunate thing was that they were at least 300 yards away, a near impossible shot.

Thirty minutes past and it was nearing dark.  The deer had moved a little closer, but they were still a long ways off.  Though I didn’t want this to be Nehemiah’s first shot due to the long distance and high probability of failure, we decided he had nothing to lose and should give it a try.  After taking off the safety and setting his sight on the front shoulder, he exhaled slowly and pulled the trigger.

The deer jumped in a 360 and dropped.  We watched and it didn’t get up.  I looked at Nehemiah and said, “Bucko, congratulations!  I’m so proud of you!  You just did something that your Papa has never done in 10 years of hunting.”  Once it was dark, we climbed down from our stand to see the deer.  Everyone else came to see as well.  Uncle Joseph helped gut the deer.

The next day, we calculated the distance of Nehemiah’s shot.  It was 240 yards.  I’m still blown away and pretty impressed.  Nice shooting Bucko!  I will forever be in your deer hunting shadow :-)
